A Norwegian man says he was denied entry into the United States, detained for hours, strip-searched, and forcibly sent back home, all because of a meme of Vice President J.D. Vance found on his phone.

The 21-year-old tourist, Mads Mikkelsen (no relation to the actor), spoke to Norwegian outlet Nordic about the ordeal, claiming U.S. border agents at Newark Liberty International Airport accused him of “suspicious activity” after discovering a photoshopped image of Vance with a bald head, along with a photo of a wooden pipe he had crafted.
According to his interview, he was fingerprinted, strip-searched, and required to give a blood sample before being deported the same day.
The U.S. has not released an official statement, but the case is raising alarms about the expanding authority of border agents to search electronic devices, and what kind of political content may now be treated as grounds for removal.
