NEWS: Trump Threatens Federal Takeover of NYC If Mamdani Becomes Mayor
President Donald Trump suggested this week that his administration might intervene to take over New York City if Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election this November. In a White House Cabinet meeting Monday, Trump called Mamdani a “communist” and said, “If a communist gets elected to run New York, it can never be the same. But we have tremendous power at the White House to run places when we have to.”

The statement follows Mamdani’s victory in the June 24 Democratic primary, where the Queens Assemblymember and Democratic Socialist became the party’s official nominee. Trump’s remarks were interpreted by many as a direct threat to override the will of New York voters.
